"Survival of the Fittest"- Mental Health Matters the Most: Story of Karan Johar

Karan Johar, a renowned Indian film director, producer, screenwriter and costume designer and Head of Dharma Productions. He is popularly known as KJO, when it comes to Bollywood every young talent or beginners want to work with him. He has name, fame, money, luxury and what not…………But this filmmaker suffered from a mental illness. He has the courage to put up a brave face for the world while his world was crumbling with depression………!!!!!

He opened up about his two years of battle with “Clinical Depression”. Yes, you read it right, the only difference between him and others is he accept it, he fought with it and he overcame it. He underwent therapy and medications, he had sought professional help and shared this with others without thinking of what people would say?, what people would think about him? And then he is back to his old version and living a happy life.

He said, “I show people speaking about their depression openly. There was phase in my life when I was depressed. At that time, I thought I am getting a cardiac arrest. I felt in the middle of a meeting, after that I left the meeting in between saying I have something urgent to do and rushed to the doctor. He said I had an anxiety attack. I went to a psychologist post that. Further, I went through a series of anti-anxiety medication for it. A year and a half post that, when I stopped it, I realised that I am in a much better place. Today I actually feel the emotion of excitement and happiness. When you go through it, you stop feeling that zing of emotion. Today I am getting all of them back.”

Let’s understand what he said regarding his therapy sessions, “During those sessions, we touched on many things of my life. I felt that I did not deal entirely with the loss of my father, though it’s been 11 or 12 years, I felt the pain and hurt of certain relationships that had dwindled from my life and I was carrying all that baggage. And the fear of future, the fear that I was not being able to find a life partner. At one point the lack of love in my life was really bothering me. Today I feel a lot freer of it. I feel there are lots of other things to look forward to”

From his story of courage, we can identify that mental health does not have any co-relation with Name, Fame, Money or Success. It is up to us how to choose to live our life. There can be two ways;

One is to stay silent, let your mental illness take a tall on you because you don’t accept it, fight alone and then surrender to the sadness, irritation and a chaotic life. Because what will others say if you visit a psychologist or psychiatrist for professional help?....!!!!!

Another way can be, accept the mental challenges you face, share with your dear ones, visit psychologist or psychiatrist for professional help, overcome your challenge and live a happy, cheerful and peaceful life. Without thinking of what others will say, if they speak, let them speak.

Last but not the least if you want to live a life to the fullest, it is only you who can help you out thoroughly and not others so,

Break the social stigma

Speak up

Seek professional help

Help yourself and your loved ones and live a happy and healthy life...!!!

Stay tuned with I’mhappy because we are here to help you out…….
